Prince of Transylvania

1570–1711 · 16th century

Prince of Transylvania was the title of the rulers of the Principality of Transylvania, first taken by John Sigismund Zápolya when he gave up the Hungarian royal title at the Treaty of Speyer in 1570. The princes were elected by the Transylvanian diet and ruled under Ottoman suzerainty until the principality passed to the Habsburgs at the end of the 17th century.
