George II Rákóczi

1621–1660 · 17th century

George II Rákóczi was Prince of Transylvania from 1648. Seeking the Polish crown, he invaded Poland in 1657 in alliance with Sweden without Ottoman permission; his army was destroyed, and the Ottomans and Crimean Tatars ravaged Transylvania in reprisal. Deposed by the sultan, he fought on to regain power and died of wounds received in battle in 1660.
