Godfrey III, Count of Louvain

1142–1190 · 12th century · Also known as Godfrey III of Leuven

Godfrey III was count of Louvain and Brussels and titular duke of Lower Lorraine from 1142 until his death in 1190. Succeeding his father as an infant, he ended the long feud with the Berthout lords of Grimbergen in 1159 and strengthened his family's hold on the lands that became Brabant. From about 1183 he shared power with his son Henry I, who took the title of duke of Brabant.
