Gokstad ship

c. 890 · 9th century

The Gokstad ship is a Viking ship of about 890, found in a burial mound at Gokstad near Sandefjord in Vestfold, Norway, and excavated in 1880. About 23 metres long, built of oak with sixteen pairs of oars and a sail, it was seaworthy enough for a replica to cross the Atlantic in 1893. It held the burial of a powerful man and is displayed in Oslo.
