Harald Fairhair

c. 850 – c. 932 · 10th century · Also known as Harald Finehair, Harald I of Norway

Harald Fairhair is remembered as the first king of a united Norway. According to the sagas he subdued the petty kingdoms of the west coast and won the Battle of Hafrsfjord, traditionally dated around 872. Later tradition held that his rule drove chieftains to settle Iceland, Orkney and Shetland, although much of his story was written down centuries later.
