Battle of Stiklestad

1030 · 11th century

The Battle of Stiklestad was fought on 29 July 1030 in Trøndelag, Norway, where King Olaf Haraldsson, returning from exile to reclaim his throne, was killed by an army of Norwegian farmers and chieftains loyal to Cnut the Great. Olaf was soon venerated as a saint, and his cult as Saint Olaf, Norway's eternal king, helped establish Christianity and royal authority in the country.
