Great Māhele
The Great Māhele was the land division of 1848 in the Kingdom of Hawaii, carried out under King Kamehameha III. It divided the land, previously held under the chiefs, among the crown, the government and the chiefs, and later laws allowed commoners and, from 1850, foreigners to own land outright. Within decades much land had passed to foreign, mainly American, owners and sugar plantations.
