Bayonet Constitution
The Bayonet Constitution was the constitution forced on King Kalākaua of Hawaii in July 1887 by a group of mainly American planters and businessmen backed by an armed militia. It sharply reduced the king's powers and imposed property and income qualifications that gave wealthy foreigners the vote while excluding many Native Hawaiians and all Asians. It prepared the way for the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
