Native Hawaiians

Also known as Kanaka Maoli

Native Hawaiians are the Polynesian people of the Hawaiian Islands, who settled them roughly a thousand years ago and later formed the Kingdom of Hawaii. Disease cut their numbers sharply in the 19th century. After the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, the Republic of Hawaii restricted voting through property and literacy tests and loyalty oaths, excluding most Native Hawaiians from power.
