Nationality question

The nationality question was the problem of how to accommodate the many national groups within the Habsburg monarchy. The 1867 Compromise satisfied the Hungarians but left Czechs, Poles, Slovenes, Croats and others in subordinate positions. The resulting parliamentary obstruction and unrest made it the central governance challenge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
