The Poles are a West Slavic people whose homeland is Poland. After the partitions of the eighteenth century they lived under the Russian, Prussian and Austrian monarchies. In the Austro-Hungarian Empire they were one of the nationalities left without equal autonomy by the 1867 Compromise, while in the Russian Empire they faced pressure towards Russification.
