Newlands Resolution

1898 · 19th century

The Newlands Resolution was the joint resolution of the United States Congress, introduced by Representative Francis G. Newlands, by which the United States annexed the Republic of Hawaii in July 1898. A joint resolution was used because an annexation treaty could not win the two-thirds Senate majority required. It passed during the Spanish–American War, which had shown Hawaii's value as a naval base, and Hawaii became a US territory in 1900.
