ʻIolani Palace

1882 · 19th century · Also known as Iolani Palace

ʻIolani Palace in Honolulu was the royal residence of the Kingdom of Hawaii, completed in 1882 for King Kalākaua and lit by electricity from 1887. After the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893 it served as the seat of the provisional government, the Republic of Hawaii and later the territorial government. Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned in one of its rooms in 1895 after a failed royalist rising.
