Green Sahara
The Green Sahara refers to a humid phase in which much of the present Sahara Desert was covered by grassland, lakes and rivers, ending several thousand years ago. As the region dried, surface water largely disappeared. This environmental change shaped the foundation of the Garamantian Empire, whose people relied on underground water engineering to farm in the Fezzan.
