Gulf of Bone

Also known as Gulf of Boni

The Gulf of Bone is a large gulf of the Flores Sea between the south-western and south-eastern peninsulas of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its coasts were the heartland of Bugis kingdoms: Luwu at its head was considered the oldest, and Bone, based at Watampone on the western shore, became the strongest from the 17th century. The gulf carried trade in rice, iron and forest products.
