Gullah
The Gullah are African Americans of the Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia, descended from enslaved West and Central Africans brought to work the rice, indigo and cotton plantations. Relative isolation on the Sea Islands preserved much of their African heritage, including the Gullah creole language, crafts such as sweetgrass baskets, foodways and folk beliefs.
