South Carolina
South Carolina is a region of the south-eastern United States between the Savannah River and North Carolina. It was home to Mississippian chiefdoms such as Cofitachequi and saw a short-lived French fort at Charlesfort in 1562. English settlers founded Charles Town in 1670, creating a plantation colony worked by enslaved Africans. In 1860 it was the first state to secede, triggering the formation of the Confederacy.
