Charlesfort
Charlesfort was a short-lived French Huguenot outpost built in 1562 by Jean Ribault on Parris Island, in present-day South Carolina. Ribault left a small garrison there while he returned to France, but supplies failed to arrive and the men abandoned it in 1563. The Spanish later built their town of Santa Elena on the same site, where archaeologists have identified its remains.
