African Americans
African Americans are Americans of wholly or partly sub-Saharan African descent, most of them descendants of people enslaved in what became the United States from the seventeenth century until abolition in 1865. In the nineteenth century some free African Americans emigrated to escape discrimination, to Haiti in the 1820s and to Liberia, founded for them by the American Colonization Society.
