Hafez

c. 1325–1390 · 14th century · Also known as Hafiz of Shiraz, Khwaja Shams al-Din Muhammad Hafez

Hafez was a Persian poet of Shiraz, the most celebrated master of the ghazal, or lyric love poem. He lived under the Injuid and Muzaffarid rulers of Fars, praising some patrons and mocking the piety of others. His collected poems, the Divan, mix love, wine and mysticism, are still widely read and recited in Iran, and are used for divination.
