Helsinki Final Act
The Helsinki Final Act was signed on 1 August 1975 in Helsinki by 35 states, including the United States, Canada, the Soviet Union and almost all European countries, at the end of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe. It recognised the inviolability of post-war borders and committed the signatories to respect human rights, giving dissidents in the Eastern bloc a basis for their demands.
