Hemachandra

1088–1173 · 12th century · Also known as Hemacandra

Hemachandra was a Jain monk, poet and polymath at the court of the Chaulukya kings Jayasimha Siddharaja and Kumarapala of Gujarat. He wrote grammars of Sanskrit and Prakrit, lexicons, works on poetics, the Trishashti-shalaka-purusha-charitra on Jain sacred history and the Yogashastra. His influence helped make Kumarapala a patron of Jainism, and he is regarded as a founding figure of Gujarati learning.
