Henry IV Probus

c. 1258–1290 · 13th century · Also known as Henry IV the Righteous

Henry IV Probus was Duke of Wrocław from 1270 and High Duke of Poland at Kraków from 1288 to 1290. Raised at the Bohemian court, he was a patron of German poetry and wrote verse in Middle High German himself. He sought a royal crown for Poland, but died young, possibly poisoned, and his ambitions passed with his lands to rival princes.
