HMS Royal Charles (1655)

1655–1667 · 17th century

The Royal Charles was an English warship of about eighty guns, launched in 1655 as the Naseby for Oliver Cromwell's navy and renamed at the Restoration in 1660, when it carried Charles II home from the Netherlands. During the Raid on the Medway in June 1667, Dutch forces under Michiel de Ruyter captured the ship at Chatham and towed it to the Netherlands as a trophy. Its carved stern is displayed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
