Holodomor

1932–1933 · 20th century

The Holodomor, 'killing by hunger', was the famine of 1932–1933 in Soviet Ukraine, caused by Stalin's forced collectivisation, impossible grain quotas, the blacklisting of villages and bans on peasants leaving in search of food. Estimates of the dead in Ukraine range from about 3.5 to 5 million. Ukraine and many other states recognise it as genocide, and its memory became central to Ukrainian national identity.
