Holyrood Abbey

1128 · 12th century

Holyrood Abbey is a ruined abbey of Augustinian canons in Edinburgh, founded by David I in 1128. Kings often stayed in its guesthouse, which developed into the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the royal residence that still stands beside the ruins. The abbey church was used for royal weddings and coronations, was damaged in English attacks in the 1540s and fell into ruin after its roof collapsed in 1768.
