Horea

1731–1785 · 18th century · Also known as Vasile Ursu Nicola

Horea, born Vasile Ursu Nicola, was a Romanian serf who led the peasant revolt of 1784 in the Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania together with Cloșca and Crișan. The rebels rose against labour dues and Hungarian landlords, attacking manors across the region. Habsburg troops suppressed the revolt, and Horea and Cloșca were broken on the wheel at Alba Iulia in February 1785.
