House of Grimaldi

The House of Grimaldi is a family of Genoese origin that has ruled Monaco since 1297, when François Grimaldi seized its fortress. One of the great Guelph clans of Genoa, the family lost and regained Monaco several times before securing it in the 15th century, and from 1612 its rulers styled themselves princes. The present line descends from Princess Louise-Hippolyte, whose husband took the Grimaldi name in 1731.
