House of Movilă

16th–17th century · 16th century · Also known as Movilești

The House of Movilă was a Moldavian boyar family that gave the principality several princes around 1600, notably Ieremia Movilă (1595–1606) and Simion Movilă, who ruled with Polish backing in rivalry with Michael the Brave and Ottoman candidates. The family built Sucevița Monastery, and Peter Mohyla, a son of Simion, became the reforming Orthodox Metropolitan of Kyiv.
