Michael the Brave

1558–1601 · 16th century · Also known as Mihai Viteazul

Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul) was prince of Wallachia from 1593 to 1601. He rebelled against Ottoman overlordship, winning at Călugăreni in 1595, and in 1599 and 1600 took control of Transylvania and Moldavia, briefly uniting the three principalities under one ruler. His rule soon collapsed and he was assassinated in 1601, but he later became a symbol of Romanian unity.
