Bessarabia

Bessarabia is a historical region between the Prut and Dniester rivers in eastern Europe, the eastern half of the medieval Principality of Moldavia. Russia annexed it from the Ottoman Empire in 1812. It united with Romania in 1918, was taken by the Soviet Union in 1940, and today forms most of the Republic of Moldova, with its northern and southern fringes in Ukraine.
