Moldova
Moldova is a landlocked country in eastern Europe between Romania and Ukraine, with its capital at Chișinău. Its core is the land between the Prut and the Dniester, the eastern half of the medieval Principality of Moldavia, annexed by Russia in 1812 as Bessarabia. After union with Romania (1918–1940) and Soviet rule, it declared independence in 1991; the breakaway Transnistria region lies beyond its control.
