House of Visconti

1277–1447 · 13th century

The House of Visconti was the noble family that ruled Milan from the late thirteenth century until 1447, first as lords and from 1395 as dukes. Under Gian Galeazzo Visconti they built a state covering much of northern Italy and threatened Florence, and they also held Genoa at times, including from 1421 to 1435. Their lands passed through Bianca Maria Visconti to her husband Francesco Sforza.
