Huallaga River

The Huallaga is a river of central and northern Peru, about 1,140 km long, rising in the Andes near Cerro de Pasco and flowing north past Huánuco and through the San Martín region to join the Marañón. Its forests bordered the lands of the Chachapoya culture to the west. In the late 20th century the Upper Huallaga valley was a centre of coca growing and of the Shining Path insurgency.
