Hürrem Sultan
Hürrem Sultan, known in Europe as Roxelana, was the chief consort and legal wife of the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the mother of his successor Selim II and the first haseki sultan. Presumably born in Ruthenia to an Orthodox family, she was captured by Crimean Tatars in a slave raid, taken to Constantinople and became Suleiman's favourite concubine around his accession in 1520. Breaking with custom, he freed and married her, and she became his most trusted adviser, influencing appointments and diplomacy, the first in a series of powerful women of the Sultanate of Women. She founded the Haseki Sultan Complex and died in 1558.
