Selim II

1524–1574 · 16th century · Also known as Selim the Blond, Sarı Selim, Selim the Drunkard

Selim II was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1566 until his death in 1574, a son of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan. He secured the succession by defeating his brother Bayezid near Konya in 1559; Bayezid fled to Safavid Persia and was handed over and executed with his four sons in 1561. Selim did not lead his armies in person, and his grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha conducted much of the government. His reign saw the conquest of Cyprus from Venice in 1570–1571, a heavy naval defeat at Lepanto in 1571, the recovery of Tunis from Spain in 1574 and the building of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne. He died after a fall on a marble floor while drunk.
