Sokollu Mehmed Pasha

1505–1579 · 16th century · Also known as Mehmed-paša Sokolović, Sokollu Mehmet Paşa

Sokollu Mehmed Pasha was an Ottoman statesman, grand vizier from 1565 to 1579 under Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murad III. Born into an Orthodox Christian family in Ottoman Herzegovina, he was taken as a boy through the devşirme and rose to be High Admiral of the Fleet, Governor-General of Rumelia and vizier. As grand vizier he kept Suleiman's death at Szigetvár secret in 1566 until Selim II could take power, made peace with the Habsburgs at Edirne in 1568 and rebuilt the fleet after Lepanto. He helped restore the Serbian Patriarchate of Peć in 1557, endowed the eleven-arched bridge at Višegrad and was assassinated on 11 October 1579.
