Hypatia

c. 355–415 · 4th century

Hypatia was a Neoplatonist philosopher, mathematician and astronomer in Alexandria, the daughter of the mathematician Theon. She taught philosophy to pagan and Christian pupils and advised the city's leaders. In March 415 she was murdered by a Christian mob during a conflict between the prefect Orestes and the bishop Cyril, and she later became a symbol of learning destroyed by intolerance.
