Orestes (Roman general)

d. 476 · 5th century

Orestes was a Roman politician and general of the late Western Empire, who had once served as a secretary of Attila the Hun. As master of soldiers he drove out the emperor Julius Nepos in 475 and made his young son Romulus Augustulus emperor. When he refused to grant land in Italy to the barbarian troops, they rose under Odoacer, who captured and executed him at Placentia in August 476.
