Romulus Augustulus

deposed 476 CE · 5th century

Romulus Augustulus was the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, a youth placed on the throne by his father, the general Orestes. He was deposed in 476 CE by the Germanic commander Odoacer, a date conventionally used to mark the end of Roman rule in the West. Accounts of the Carolingian Empire note that Charlemagne's coronation in 800 created the first Western emperor since his deposition.
