Orestes (mythology)
Orestes was a hero of Greek myth, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, who avenged his father's murder by killing his mother and her lover Aegisthus. His story is the subject of Aeschylus's Oresteia and of plays by Sophocles and Euripides. Herodotus records that in the 6th century BCE the Spartans, on Delphi's advice, took his supposed bones from Tegea, after which they prevailed over the city.
