Oreste Baratieri

1841–1901 · 19th century

Oreste Baratieri (1841–1901) was an Italian general who had fought with Garibaldi's Thousand and became governor of the colony of Eritrea in the early 1890s. Commanding the Italian army in the First Italo-Ethiopian War, he was decisively defeated by Menelik II at the Battle of Adwa on 1 March 1896. The disaster ended his career, brought down the Crispi government and secured Ethiopia's independence.
