    Convention of Chuenpi cedes Hong Kong Island to Britain

    During the First Opium War, Charles Elliot and the Qing envoy Qishan agreed terms ceding Hong Kong Island. Neither government accepted the deal, but the 1842 Treaty of Nanking confirmed the cession.

    Supreme Court frees the Amistad Africans

    The Court ruled that the Mende captives who had seized the slave ship Amistad had been illegally enslaved. Argued by John Quincy Adams, the case became a cause for abolitionists.

    William Henry Harrison dies a month into his presidency

    President William Henry Harrison died 31 days after taking office, the shortest presidency in US history. His death raised the first test of presidential succession, settled when John Tyler took full office.
