Pierre Chanel

1803–1841 · 19th century · Also known as Peter Chanel

Pierre Chanel (1803–1841) was a French Catholic priest of the Marist order who landed on Futuna in 1837 as one of the first missionaries in the western Pacific. After a son of the island's king Niuliki sought baptism, men from the king's household killed him on 28 April 1841. Futuna turned Catholic soon afterwards; Chanel was canonised in 1954 and is the patron saint of Oceania.
