Ahmed Urabi

1841–1911 · 19th century · Also known as Ahmed Orabi, Urabi Pasha

Ahmed Urabi was an Egyptian army officer who led a nationalist movement against the Khedive Tewfik and European control of Egypt's finances. Of peasant origin, he opposed the dominance of Turco-Circassian officers and became minister of war in 1882. Britain invaded, defeated his army at Tel el-Kebir in September 1882 and occupied Egypt, and Urabi was exiled to Ceylon until 1901.
