Hussein Kamel of Egypt

1853–1917 · 19th century · Also known as Sultan Hussein Kamel

Hussein Kamel was a son of Khedive Ismail and uncle of Abbas II. When Britain declared a protectorate over Egypt in December 1914, deposing Abbas II and ending Ottoman sovereignty, it made Hussein Kamel ruler with the title of sultan, marking the break with Istanbul. He reigned during the First World War, when Egypt served as a major British base, and was succeeded on his death in 1917 by his brother Fuad.
