Hussein Dey

c. 1765–1838 · 19th century

Hussein Dey (c. 1765–1838) was the last dey of the Regency of Algiers, ruling from 1818 to 1830. In 1827, during a dispute over debts owed by France for grain, he struck the French consul Pierre Deval with a fly-whisk, giving France a pretext for a naval blockade. When the French invaded in 1830 he surrendered Algiers and went into exile, dying in Alexandria.
