1854–1931 · 20th century · Also known as Sharif Hussein

Hussein bin Ali, a Hashemite, was appointed Sharif and Emir of Mecca by the Ottomans in 1908. Encouraged by the Hussein–McMahon correspondence, he launched the Arab Revolt in June 1916 and proclaimed himself King of the Hejaz. His sons Faisal and Abdullah became kings of Iraq and Jordan, but he lost the Hejaz to Ibn Saud in 1924–1925.
