Person
Pierre Deval
Pierre Deval was the French consul in Algiers in the 1820s. During an audience in April 1827, in a dispute over unpaid French debts for grain supplied by the Bacri and Busnach trading houses, Hussein Dey struck him with a fly-whisk. France used the insult to justify a naval blockade of Algiers and, in 1830, the invasion that ended the Regency and began French rule in Algeria.
