Oreshek Fortress

1323 · 14th century · Also known as Oreshek, Shlisselburg Fortress, Nöteborg

Oreshek is a fortress on an island at the source of the Neva River from Lake Ladoga, founded by Novgorod in 1323. The Treaty of Nöteborg, the first border agreement between Novgorod and Sweden, was signed there the same year. Held by Sweden as Nöteborg from 1612, it was taken by Peter the Great in 1702 and renamed Shlisselburg, later serving as a notorious political prison.
